Andrea P. Leers, FAIA is Principal of Leers Weinzapfel Associates, Boston MA, the 2007 AIA Firm of the Year. The firm has a record of distinguished design work for public, institutional and private clients, and special expertise in the design of courthouses. The firm has received many design awards, including citations from the National Center for State Courts for the Northern Essex District Court, Newburyport, MA and Fenton Judicial Center, Lawrence, MA, and GSA Design Awards for the U.S. District Courthouse in Worcester, MA and the U.S. District Courthouse in Portland, ME. Current projects include the recently completed U.S. District Court in Orlando, FL, as well as a new courthouse in Howard County, MD; a new trial courthouse in Taunton, MA; and a new court facility in Bangor, ME. A national leader in courthouse design, Ms. Leers recently gave a series of lectures on courthouse architecture at the Sorbonne in Paris and has taught the Professional Development Seminar, "The New American Courthouse," at the Harvard Graduate School of Design since 1992. She was an Instructor for the Judicial Education Program sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center in 1998, and in 1991, she was a speaker at "Boston's New Federal Courthouse: Context, Planning and Design Colloquium," jointly sponsored by the Harvard Law School and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Ms. Leers is currently Adjunct Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and has previously taught architectural design at Yale University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
