Frederick Merrill, FAICP, LEED AP, principal, Sasaki Associates, Watertown, MA, is a senior planner with 30 years of national experience planning and designing urban districts, corridors, neighborhoods, and central businesses districts; master planning communities and mixed-use developments; and repurposing brownfields, military bases, and former industrial sites. Fred leads complex planning processes and promotes collaboration between the client, multiple stakeholders, and professional disciplines while moving the project forward to desired outcomes. Fred works closely with private, public, and institutional clients to understand their project measures of success and creates a planning process to achieve their goals. His projects are based on strong planning and design ideas, concepts, and best practices that utilize the latest technology for analysis, illustration, communication, and public engagement. Fred holds a master of city planning and a master of science in architectural studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds a bachelor of science in land economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is a frequent presenter at national planning and development conferences including the Urban Land Institute and American Planning Association and co-teaches an executive education class in sustainable planning at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Fred is also a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners, one of the planning profession's highest honors.
