Senior Vice President
Design and Construction, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

John H Miller is the Senior Vice President, Design and Construction for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. In this role, he leads a team of almost 30 persons, involved in more than 50 projects globally in some stage of development, design, construction and pre-opening.  Miller oversees all aspects of Four Seasons design and construction globally, upholding aesthetic and functional standards for new developments as well as major renovations, looking to blend architecture and interior design that makes each Four Seasons guest experience authentic and unique. In coming to Four Seasons in 2015, Miller brought more than 25 years of industry-leading experience in luxury hospitality, most recently as Vice President, Design and Construction, Asia-Pacific with MGM Resorts International. There he worked in support of resorts in Sanya, China and near Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, as well as the design of a Bellagio soon to open in Shanghai, and a multi-hotel complex under construction in Mumbai. Prior to joining MGM, John spent more than 22 years with the Peninsula Hotels group. There he managed the design from Concept to Opening for Peninsula hotels in Chicago, Tokyo and Shanghai, all of the design in Bangkok and Paris, significant renovations in New York, Hong Kong, and Manila, and design proposals for Jakarta, Phuket, Tokyo, London, Delhi, Sydney, San Francisco, and Carmel Valley.  He also played a lead role in he company's committee on sustainable design practices.

The work at Peninsula was in the context of an Owner-Operator, in which Peninsula’s parent, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, has majority ownership of most of the projects. This meant a very high degree of control over the Program, Budget, Project Management, Timetable, Consultants and Contractors. That contrasts to working at MGM Hospitality, which is established strictly as a Hotel Management company, and where the structure of control over the projects is very different from the Owner-Operator world. In his current role at Four Seasons, Miller is also working in a Hotel Management company structure, meaning that without control of the investment, he and the team are faced with the challenges of trying to influence the Owner of the project. But throughout the years, with a variety of hotel company experiences, Miller has always worked to have development, design and operations come together to deliver best-in-class luxury hotels, resorts and residences around the world.

Drawing on his years working in Asia, and his hotel design experience, Miller designed and built a combined retreat / family home in a small town in Borneo. The process offered the opportunity to create a luxury home experience with a regional vernacular, set in a rich tropical garden. Miller spends time in Borneo, and in Hong Kong, when he is able to get away from Toronto.

Miller holds a dual degree from the University of Pennsylvania - a Bachelor of Arts, in Design of Environment (Architecture), and a Bachelor of Applied Science, in Civil and Urban Engineering.
