Making the Most of Local Climate Policies: A 101 for Real Estate Development

A 101 for Real Estate Development

Curious about what to expect when coming to campus? Please visit our Campus Learning page.

The growing enactment of aggressive climate policies such as building benchmarking, energy use and impact disclosure, and net zero development standards around the US are requiring communities, and the developers, real estate professionals and architects who serve them, to meet higher standards. This session aims to help professionals turn these standards into an opportunity.

Leaders will receive an overview of the current local climate change policy priorities and offer key strategies that they need to handle these burgeoning requirements in a way that creates value for all parties. The session seeks to foster public/private collaboration to ensure the built environment is prepared for the impacts of climate change while also minimizing its contribution to it.

As noted in the most recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and as witnessed nearly every day around the world, the climate has changed and will continue to change for the worse, if we do not act now. Increased temperatures, extreme storms, flooding, drought, sea level rise and wildfires are becoming the norm and are now an essential consideration for all development. Whether you work in a community that is a driver of local climate action or not, there are opportunities for real estate development to be part of the solution by understanding the context and opportunities and actively seeking to collaboratively develop climate friendly policies with local agencies.

For real estate professionals, addressing climate change through development yields measurable benefits that aid in financing their properties, including improved health, air quality, and productivity. Participants will learn how to develop proactive solutions that create competitive advantage.

The session is geared to leaders across real estate development, both public and private, genuinely interested in participating in a collaborative effort to create a resilient future for the communities they serve.
