MATTHEW A. MORRISSEY serves as Executive Director of the New Bedford Economic Development Council, Inc. (NBEDC). The NBEDC is governed by a nine-member board of directors and consists of a 240 person Council. In conjunction with the Mayor’s Office, the NBEDC sets the agenda for New Bedford’s strategic economic development growth. New Bedford, like most mid-size cities emerging from an industrial past, requires solid, thoughtful, cohesive planning. For the past three years under Mr. Morrissey’s leadership, the NBEDC has enhanced its synergy with City Hall and is in the center of 11 planning processes that will culminate in the City’s first Master Plan in forty years. Efforts also target job growth areas such as creative enterprises, marine science and technology, alternative energy, medical devices, biotech manufacturing. The NBEDC continues to facilitate broadening public/private partnerships and leads a fortune 100 level targeted marketing campaign. Efforts have resulted in the ground breaking of the city’s first hotel in 40 years; a dramatic increase in new businesses in the city’s historic downtown; the awarding of municipal land to spur a $45 Million mixed use development and the redevelopment on the city’s upper harbor as a premier crew course; and plans to construct a $3M water front community center and boathouse. All remain challenging, but have spurred other development projects on the city’s waterfront. Mr. Morrissey brings strong entrepreneurial and management experience to his leadership of the NBEDC, having been a management consultant for a government consulting firm and co-founder of a knowledge management software company. As Assistant to the President of the University of Massachusetts, he worked closely with the President performing various tasks ranging from government relations to coordinating economic development initiatives. Mr. Morrissey serves the community on numerous non-profit boards in the South Coast region. Mr. Morrissey is an alumnus of Harvard University Graduate School of Design’s Advanced Management Development Program in Real Estate (AMDP).
