Dr. Reinhard Goethert directs the Special Interest Group in Urban Settlements (SIGUS) in the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT. He champions the energy of the informal sector in defining city growth and development, and in the rebuilding recovery period after disasters.  His background includes design of low-income housing projects, training programs for international development agencies, and community approaches in rebuilding after disasters. He has designed and managed rebuilding projects in Banda Aceh after the tsunami, and recovery policy research in Sri Lanka and Haiti.
