Cecil Abbey
We spoke with Cecil in early 2026, after he took Hotel Design and Development: Insights from Globally Renowned Properties online.
How would you describe your overall experience in the Hotel Design and Development Online program?
This has been an exceptional learning experience. In just a few days, the program delivered an extraordinary depth of insight — bringing me rapidly up to speed on the essential terminology, frameworks, and strategic thinking that underpin globally successful hotel development.
“What impressed me most was the comprehensive scope. It connected the unseen micro-dimensions — the emotional intelligence behind guest experience, brand positioning, and design intent — to the macro realities of financing, construction, operations, and long-term asset management across international hotel portfolios.”
The program masterfully bridged vision and execution, demonstrating how design, finance, and operations must align seamlessly to create enduring hospitality brands. It was not simply informative — it fundamentally reshaped how I understand and approach hotel development at both a local and global level.
Would you recommend it to someone working in hospitality design and development, and if so, why?
I would absolutely recommend this program. Beyond the depth of knowledge shared and the carefully curated reading from industry-leading experts, what truly sets it apart is the real-world insight.
“Learning directly from instructors who have successfully contributed to the development and operation of some of the world’s most significant hotel design projects brought theory to life in a practical, compelling way.”
The global cohort added another powerful dimension — participants shared firsthand experiences and tested them against established best practices, creating a rich and dynamic exchange of ideas.
Most importantly, the program illuminated the critical interplay between stakeholders — owners, designers, operators, consultants — and demonstrated how alignment, clarity of roles, and strategic collaboration are the true drivers of successful hospitality projects. It doesn’t just inform; it fundamentally elevates the way you think, lead, and execute.
I am currently leading several projects at the intersection of wellness, hospitality, and healthcare — some in dense urban centers, others in remote and scenic destinations.
Although the contexts vary significantly, the principles reinforced throughout the program transcend geography. They influence not only what is built, but how and why it is conceived, developed, and sustained.
The experience sharpened my strategic perspective and strengthened my overall development framework, equipping me with the tools to address the commercial, operational, and experiential dimensions of each project with greater clarity and confidence. The case study of The Peninsula Istanbul particularly resonated with my design philosophy, illustrating how heritage, context, and brand vision can be seamlessly integrated into a globally relevant yet locally authentic destination.
“Most importantly, the program reframed my understanding of development beyond the mere delivery of a physical asset. It reinforced the importance of local context, the emotional impact of design decisions, and the responsibility to create spaces that genuinely connect with their users. These human and cultural dimensions are not secondary to finance and administration; they are essential drivers of long-term value creation and sustainable success.”
As a result, I am better positioned to deliver purposeful, contextually grounded, and future-ready projects — developments that are not only financially sound, but experientially meaningful and aligned with their broader aspirations.
AMDP
You’re now in your second term of the Advanced Management Development Program in Real Estate (AMDP). How has the program challenged or stretched you compared to other executive programs you’ve completed?
What truly differentiates this program is the caliber of every element within it — the depth and rigor of the course material, the world-class instructors, and the exceptional quality of the participants.
“This is not a passive academic experience; it is an immersive, high-level exchange that transcends the classroom.”
The instructors bring global expertise and, importantly, intellectual humility. They invite challenge, encourage debate, and welcome scrutiny — creating an environment where ideas are tested, not simply presented. At the same time, the participants are accomplished professionals who are equally prepared to share candidly, question their own assumptions, and relearn. That dynamic — mutual respect combined with intellectual rigor — is rare and powerful.

What kind of professional, especially from developing markets—do you think should absolutely consider AMDP, and what mindset should they bring to get the most out of it?
For professionals — particularly those from developing markets — who are engaged in real estate, hospitality, or large-scale development and aspire to expand both their immediate capabilities and their long-term strategic vision, this program is truly transformative. It pushes you beyond local limitations and exposes you to global standards, governance models, financial structures, and design philosophies that fundamentally redefine what is possible.
To extract its full value, however, you must arrive with the right mindset: intellectual curiosity, humility, and the courage to be challenged. This is not a program for those seeking affirmation — it is for those seeking growth.
“You must be prepared to contribute meaningfully, to share your own experiences openly, and equally to learn and unlearn alongside accomplished peers from across the globe.”
The returns are both immediate and enduring. From day one, you gain access to a powerful alumni network and a passionate, highly engaged community of global leaders. Over time, the greater return becomes evident — a more integrated, strategic, and globally attuned way of thinking that reshapes how you evaluate risk, create value, and lead development projects at scale.
