Integrated Project Management

A Risk-Reducing Project Delivery Method Emphasizing Collaboration, Accountability, and Control

Curious about what to expect when coming to campus? Please visit our Campus Learning page.

In today’s competitive, variable and changing environment, delivering projects successfully on budget, on schedule and with the integrity of the design intact requires a collaborative, whole team approach. While Design / Bid / Building, Design-Build, CM at risk Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), LEAN Construction, and other delivery methods have their merits, they have not proven to be the alternative project delivery method the construction industry had hoped they would be — an alternate approach, one that is scalable, adaptable and collaborative to meet the needs for everyday projects.

After giving an overview of contemporary project delivery challenges and methods, this program introduces a transparent, collaborative and accountable process to enable project managers to: (1) effectively manage resources; (2) the competitive selection and management of the consultant team and contractors, and; (3) complete projects within budget on schedule consistent with the original design expectation. Our distinguished instructors facilitate an interactive learning environment and explore these issues through lectures and case studies of real projects. They will also address the enduring impacts of COVID-19 / supply chain management on project management, project delivery, and the A/E/C industry.

What to Expect

There hasn’t been a period in the construction industry’s history where management of one’s particular discipline wasn’t an important skill for every successful architect, planner, consultant, contractor, or project owner. The contribution of the construction industry in our economy and its role in promoting growth is undisputed. The same stands true for the need to raise standards and improve the construction industry’s operating efficiency: all projects need to be delivered on time, within budget, and at a high-quality standard to bring the needed benefit to the environment and society at large. Resource and budgetary constraints, together with innovation in software and technology, demonstrate even more the need for a broader, collaborative, holistic, effective, and efficient administration management and leadership team of projects by a project advocate who can effectively manage risk and implement needed change. The need for a comprehensive approach to the management of the project across all phases through a timely integrated project management approach is now more critical than ever.

In this in person program, participants gain an understanding of the basic and more advanced issues, tools, and concepts of an integrated project management approach. Examples are drawn from public and private sector projects of differing scales and types, from master planning, individual building, mixed-use community development and tenant improvements (and everything in between). Both US and international projects are addressed, identifying in each case the unique challenges and opportunities.

Key topics include:

  • The project life cycle and its key stages;
  • Project delivery methods option and how to decide which one suits your needs;
  • How to define and effectively manage roles and responsibilities of all entities involved in a project;
  • Effective delivery of all project stages, including:
    • Feasibility, project implementation plan and strategy, selection of consultants and contractors;
    • The RFP process, responsibilities for pre- and post-schematic phases of design, the importance of shop drawings, total project scheduling and budget controlled design;
    • Subcontractor’s involvement in the design process, design-assist, value engineering, the importance of general contractor constructability reviews and construction administration;
    • BIM implications and responsibilities, environmental issues, and the management of risk and uncertainty.
  • Master key project management principles.
  • Manage the project life cycle and key alternate project delivery methods (IPD, LEAN, Design-Build and IPMA).
  • Achieve total project scheduling and budgeting. Recognize risks and uncertainties and mitigate their effectiveness through a proactive management process.
  • Establish solid foundations and select high-performing teams (pre-qualification, RFP, comparison selection matrix).
  • Realize how to align roles and responsibilities for all stakeholders in a project.
  • Grasp how to motivate teams on concept, strategies, tools, and project implementation
  • Learn best practices for how to direct team and sub-team management and leadership, often without formal authority.
  • Discover and discuss the enduring impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the A/E/C industry and supply chain dynamics.

Architects, planners, engineers, contractors, facility managers, project managers, and building owners and developers, together with students from any of these industry disciplines.
